After nearly 3 months of planning Explorers, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers from across North Cotswold District descended on Upcote Farm, Withington, for a weekend of camping and fun. Some of the leaders got a head start and erected tents on Thursday evening, on Friday night, more tents appeared, the farm track became busy with parent’s vehicles and the children arrived to explore the camp.
Saturday morning after a full English breakfast, in a fantastic mess tent made up with some very kindly donated Gala tents (many thanks to Cheltenham Amateur Radio Association for these) followed the morning flag break. All the young people were formed into their activity groups and set off around the farm. Raft building and racing happened on the lake, an obstacle course in the field, a bushcraft zone in the woodland, and a full amateur radio station tent complete with a special event callsign (GB2NCD (Golf Bravo 2 North Cotswold District). We are grateful to Stuart – G7IHN for his assistance and also to Tony – G3YYH for his help with the radio activities. The radio station worked more than 50 contacts across Europe and many Scouts are well on the way to achieving their communicator badges. They will also receive ‘time on water’ badges and nights away badges.
The whole event could not have taken place without the most generous gift of campsite, lake and woodland from John and Sheila, who we were delighted to invite to join the young people for a full roast dinner before the strike of camp on Sunday.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the Haines family for their generous donation in John’s memory. We have used this to purchase new cool boxes which were an essential part of kit during the hot weekend, and well used by John’s Grandson and friend who came to camp to assist in cooking for all.
A great time was had by all, leaders and children alike, though a few days to catch up on missed sleep was needed.
